SILO HOUSE

ROLE: ARCHITECT

Project Type: Residential Renovation Location: Charleston, TN Phase: Unbuilt

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Located in Charleston, TN, the Silo House explored the adaptive reuse of an 80-foot-tall historic grain silo into a vertically organized single-family residence. ALLY Architecture was asked to reimagine the industrial structure as a contemporary home while embracing the inherent challenges and character of the cylindrical form.

The project required a highly unconventional approach to residential planning, carefully carving functional living spaces from the silo’s circular footprint and stacking them vertically within the existing structure. Each level was organized around a distinct programmatic function: the ground floor housed the kitchen and entry spaces, the second level served as the primary living area, and the third level contained the primary suite. Additional bedrooms occupied the fourth and fifth floors, while the sixth level was envisioned as a flexible studio space opening onto a rooftop terrace with expansive views of the surrounding landscape.

Throughout the design process, the project explored the tension between industrial infrastructure and domestic living—finding opportunities for natural light, circulation, and spatial efficiency within the constraints of the silo’s form. Although the project is unlikely to be realized, it provided a unique opportunity to investigate adaptive reuse, vertical living, and the creative possibilities found within highly unconventional structures.
