FAIRHILLS HOME ADDITION
ROLE: ARCHITECT
Project Type: Residential Renovation/Addition Location: Chattanooga, TN Phase: Complete
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Originally built as a modest ranch-style residence, this home required a thoughtful expansion to accommodate the needs of a growing family while maintaining the character and scale of the existing structure. ALLY Architecture was asked to reimagine the home through a carefully integrated addition that would provide both new living space and improved functionality without overwhelming the original architecture.
The first floor addition introduced a new garage, a more defined private entry sequence, and an additional living area designed to serve as a flexible game room and gathering space for the children. Above, the new second floor includes two bedrooms connected by a shared Jack-and-Jill bathroom, creating a dedicated space for the younger members of the family while allowing the existing home to remain largely intact.
One of the primary architectural challenges of the project was introducing a second story onto an originally low and horizontal ranch home. The design carefully worked to preserve the visual proportions and understated character of the existing structure by minimizing the perceived height of the addition and utilizing extended roof overhangs to reinforce the home’s horizontal lines. The result is an addition that feels integrated and balanced rather than simply stacked onto the original house.
