HAMIL ROAD HOUSE
ROLE: ARCHITECT
Project Type: Single Family Location: Chattanooga, TN Unit Square Footage: 3,700sf Phase: Unbuilt
Structural Engineer: Estes Russell
Project Description:
This custom residence is designed for a sloping site overlooking a creek in Chattanooga, responding carefully to both privacy and views. The approximately 3,700-square-foot home includes a primary suite, two additional bedrooms, and two distinct living spaces arranged to support everyday living and gathering.
With a busy roadway at the front of the site and a wooded creek at the rear, the design establishes a more solid, protective street presence to reduce noise and visual exposure, while opening the rear of the home toward daylight and views. Living spaces, large windows, and outdoor areas are oriented toward the creek, reinforcing a strong connection to the landscape.
The exterior combines board-formed concrete with Shou Sugi Ban siding, balancing durability and warmth. A screened front porch provides a filtered transition from the street, while a covered rear patio with a fireplace extends the living space outdoors and frames views of the creek. A two-car garage is integrated into the overall form, maintaining a cohesive and restrained architectural expression.
The result is a home that feels both protected and open—shaped by its site and designed to quietly engage its surroundings.
